Motivational factors of older adults towards the practice of Newcom in Buenos Aires: a descriptive cross-sectional study
Abstract
Introduction. Motivation is a psychological process that helps explain the growing interest of older adults in practicing the sport Newcom, even though in Argentina more than 70% of people over 60 years of age do not engage in physical activity. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify the motivational factors that drive older adults to practice Newcom in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area. Methodology. A quantitative, cross-sectional, and descriptive study was conducted. The sample was non-probabilistic. A total of 345 players were surveyed using two motivation scales based on validated instruments, from August 2022 to October 2023. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results. Regarding basic psychological needs, 37% of respondents reported practicing Newcom to satisfy their need for relatedness, 34% to feel competent, and 29% for autonomy and enjoyment. Concerning achievement goals guiding their practice, 61% identified task orientation, seeking self-improvement and personal development, and 49% ego orientation and outperforming others. Discussion. Further research is needed with a statistically representative and generalizable sample that allows comparisons by sex and age, given the scarcity of specific background and evidence for contrast. Conclusions. Older adults in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area are motivated to practice Newcom in order to socialize by forming peer groups and to improve their intrinsic physical capacities, which they perceive as empowering. Continued research on motivation is essential to inform public policies and intervention strategies that encourage physical and sports activities in older age and promote healthy aging.
