Abstract

Introduction. Postural instability during one-leg stance is a factor associated with the risk of frailty and mortality in older adults; however, sedentary behavior and physical inactivity in young Colombian adults may predispose them to similar risks. The aim of this study was to determine the reliability of the 10-second one-leg stance (OLS) test in young adults. Methodology. An observational test–retest study was conducted with 62 participants (30 men, 32 women; mean ages 20 ± 1.9 and 20 ± 1.8 years, respectively). The OLS was applied on both lower limbs using cut-off points for high risk (<10 s) and low risk (>10 s). Morphological variables were recorded using a SECA 525® bioimpedance analyzer, body mass index (BMI) was calculated (men 23.1 ± 3.8; women 23.1 ± 3.9), and handgrip strength was assessed with a Takei® dynamometer (men 31.7 ± 6.8 kg; women 26.5 ± 6.8 kg). Data analysis included descriptive statistics, normality tests, and chi-square tests to compare test and retest results, with a significance level of p<0.05. Results. The sample included participants classified as underweight, normal weight, overweight, and grade I obesity. No significant differences were found between test and retest values in either limb (p>0.05), demonstrating temporal stability and an adequate level of reliability for the OLS. Discussion. The findings are consistent with previous reports on the reproducibility of balance tests; the stability observed in young adults suggests that the OLS is applicable as a functional assessment tool in this population. Conclusions. The 10-second one-leg stance test showed an adequate level of reliability and consistency between measurements, constituting a valid and accessible tool for assessing postural balance and fall risk in young Colombian adults.
