Abstract

Introduction. Family participation is recognized as a relevant component of pediatric perioperative care, although challenges to its implementation in health services persist. This study aimed to map and describe the scientific literature on family participation in pediatric perioperative care. Methodology. A scoping review was conducted in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses for Scoping Reviews, and was registered in the Open Science Framework. Searches were performed in the Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, and LILACS databases, including studies published between 2015 and 2025. After the screening and application of the eligibility criteria, nine studies were included. No critical appraisal of methodological quality was undertaken, as recommended for scoping reviews. Results. The included studies showed methodological heterogeneity and were organized into four thematic categories, covering both the strengths and the challenges of family participation in pediatric perioperative care. Discussion. The findings suggest that parents experience emotional burden and communication-related challenges. Digital interventions and educational strategies were described as potential mediators of care and information, particularly in reducing anxiety and strengthening family involvement, although these findings were derived from different study designs and contexts. Conclusion. The available literature indicates that family participation constitutes a relevant dimension of pediatric perioperative care. However, the identified evidence is methodologically diverse, highlighting the need for multicenter, longitudinal studies to achieve greater inferential robustness.
